Family

our

Choate Family Farms is a multi-generational farming operation. We raise high quality sheep on 225 acres of pastureland in Greensboro, GA. The benefits of our family operation include leveraging the special talents and skills of our family members that bring a unique expertise to our vision.

A former engineer, Larry brings a very process-oriented and analytical discipline to create the environment and framework for a caring habitat.

Mary Lyn, a former teacher, enhances the well-being of the animals within their natural habitat with her primary focus and love on newborn lambs.

Brian, a landscape architect, brings the subject matter expertise of all the grasses and creates the best natural habitats suitable for the lambs.

Kelly, the farm head and steward to the sheep, manages the day-to-day care of the sheep, works with processors and customers. Her leadership and professional experiences allow her to challenge processes to ensure they are aligned with Choate Family Farms Vision. She is very focused on challenging traditional farming processes.

Addie & Jack are the next generation of Choate Family Farms.

Story

our

Choate Family Farms is a story of creating a new beginning and a legacy. It’s driven by a dream, a passion, and a longing to create something special.

Kelly, the youngest of three siblings, always had a sense of adventure and a taste for new culinary experiences ever since she was a child. This was encouraged by her parents, Mary Lyn and Larry. They wanted their children to experience, enjoy and create everlasting memories by traveling and exploring the wonders and beauty of the United States. Each summer since Kelly was 4 years old, the Choate Family packed up the pop-up camper and took off. Each child had a 12×12 milk crate to pack all their belongings in for the summer, yet that was never a problem. Material things didn’t matter, the only thing that really mattered was the family was together. Summers were for learning new cultures, tasting new foods, exploring National Parks, taking hikes, riding bikes, and enjoying life in its simplest and purest form. Mary Lyn and Larry were not just taking trips with their kids. They were instilling family values, showing respect for others and the environment and, little did they know, creating the foundation for what is now Choate Family Farms.

Kelly’s grandparents had a huge influence on her life. This influence focused on family and hard work. She was taught to never be afraid to pursue your dreams or desires, taking responsibility for your actions, and never stop learning. Kelly’s great granddaddy was a farmer and growing up she loved hearing the stories from her granddaddy and dad. Back in 1961, Larry had the opportunity to buy his grandfather’s 90 acres of land for $7,000 but couldn’t afford it. This lost opportunity was never lost in his dreams. Larry’s lifelong dream and Kelly’s passion to create something special merged at just the right time to build something that grew out of the love and respect we had for our family.

Kelly graduated from the University of Georgia and worked in a third-party family-owned company that embraced a culture of providing a high level of relationship driven service that separated them from commodity service providers. This instilled in Kelly the value of care, attention to detail and strong customer relationships. This is a valuable influence on the relationship she wants to have with her customers. Most importantly, earning their respect.

Upon her dad’s retirement in 2017, Choate Family Farms became a reality. We found the perfect farm that felt like home. This farm would provide a natural, stress-free habitat for our animals that enabled us to put into place our belief of total respect for our animals in everything we do.

Food has and always will continue to be the centerpiece that brings our family together. Kelly wanted to create a quality food product that would provide amazing culinary experiences by establishing a farm founded in love, care, and respect.

We realized there was an opportunity for high quality, locally grown lamb. Lamb was dominated by the New Zealand and Australian imports, as well as large domestic production houses. The benefits of locally grown lamb are captured in our customers’ words as “fresh, clean, and best tasting lamb they’ve ever tried.”

Choate Family Farms mission is simple: we are passionate about creating quality lamb products that will nourish your family in the same way we nourish our own.

We have created a nourishing, caring and loving family farm environment that is grounded in Mary Lyn and Larry’s values and that will be a legacy for future generations. As a result, we produce an outstanding food source that is a product of this environment that will enable people to experience Choate Family’s Farms unselfish focus and commitment to enrich peoples’ lives.

A day, a week, a year is not work at Choate Family Farms. It is our life and our true passion and calling. You can live your dream and bring your passion to life.
