Care

for our sheep

At Choate Family Farms, there is no higher priority than our animals nutritional, physical, and mental well-being. We strive to provide a level of care for our sheep that is unmatched in the industry.

We create a tranquil and serene environment with all natural surroundings, allowing our sheep free-range access to promote stress-free, healthy animals.

Our pastures are plentiful and protected, encouraging optimal production and availability of the natural nutrients for the sheep.

We maintain low density habitats that include spring-fed water, minerals and high quality supplemental hay in addition to the sprawling pastures on which our sheep graze.
We ensure the planting of seasonal grasses to optimize the health of our pastures and our sheep.

We utilize pasture rotation, and rest periods between rotations, to strengthen our sheep’s natural immune system, enhance their overall wellbeing, and minimize the risk of over-utilizing the land.

Sheep recycle vital nutrients back into the soil which creates healthy and strong pastures and minimizes erosion.

We practice real time evaluation of nutritional needs based on developmental stages of each lamb.

Superior genetics, exceptional diet, and a stress-free environment make for the highest quality meat, resulting in a fresh, clean taste.

And the meat is extremely tasty! Just an FYI, I particularly love lamb liver. Unlike beef or calf liver, there is NO gristle in it. Just tender and melt-in-mouth good.

Rams are males and ewes are females. Lambs are one year of age or younger and known as ram lambs and ewe lambs. They reach full maturity around 6 months old. Rams typically grow at a faster rate and have a more feisty personality. βœŒπŸ»πŸ«ΆπŸ»πŸ‘

Sheep are highly social animals. They thrive in a relaxed, stress-free natural environment. It allows them to actively engage with their friends, family and shepherds. This is evidenced by all the β€œbaaaing” (also known as bleating) that you hear in their pastures. Each sound is unique to sheep and babies know the sound of their mom right within hours after being born and this strengthens their connection. βœŒπŸ»πŸ«ΆπŸ»πŸ‘
